IN YOUR HOME TALKING TO YOUR KIDS
How to talk to your kids about prescription drug abuse:

  • First, know that they are listening, even if it seems like they're not. The fact that you are taking the time to care means a lot to them.

  • Speak honestly, openly, and from the heart. Tell your kids how prescription drug abuse can negatively affect their physical appearance, their bodily functions, and also their self-respect.

  • Don't threaten or badger your kids and don't make them answer directly about their experiences with drugs. This will just encourage them to lie.

  • Rather than just talking at your child, take the time to listen.

  • Most importantly, stay involved in your child's life: show interest in your child's daily ups and downs, attend their activities, get to know their friends, have dinner together.
